We want to help a dear friend to the K9 Klass family who needs your help. A friend of ours is traveling to China and back for a few months and cannot bring her adorable dog, Shiloh. Here is her story:

“I will pay for food and vet bills, etc. and depending on the price, I can pay a small monthly rate, but I really don’t have much money. This is why I’m moving to China. A friend has offered to help me with the finances if I need it, I just feel bad taking money from them, so I can pay a small monthly sum, but I cannot afford an expensive place.

Thank you again, I truly appreciate this. I was crying again this morning. I feel really bad for Shiloh. She’s always been such a great dog and I feel like I’m letting her down. I looked into taking her again but they really do confiscate larger dogs (over 1 foot tall) in Beijing.”

If you or someone you know, is in the position to foster a well-behaved dog in need at absolutely NO cost to you, please contact K9 Klass immediately to offer your time with small compensation and possibly save the life of Shiloh. Thank you so much for taking the time to consider helping this cause.

As Memorial Day kicks off the official start to summer, we start to shift gears in the concerns we have for our furry friends. The heat brings on new things to look out for and prevent with a little extra attention.

1. The Heat. Living in beautiful Southern California has it’s advantages–including gorgeous weather–however the heat during the day can be a bit too much for dogs. Be cautious when bringing your pet outdoors midday–especially large dogs with heavy coats. Always have an ample supply of fresh water to keep hydrated and give your pet plenty of breaks from any over exposure to the sun and heat and try and schedule walks in the mornings or early evenings.

2. Fleas. Fleas and ticks are always something to worry about, but in the summertime they come on strong. Make sure to put your pet on a flea and tick regimen all year long, but be extra carful to keep to your 30-day schedule of application in the summer. Once your dog gets fleas, it can be extremely difficult to get rid of them completely and can take up to a few weeks or even months if they settle in your home.

3. Paw problems. Some people don’t realize the sensitivity of a dog’s paw pads–but they are not built to tolerate extreme heat. In the summertime, you wouldn’t dare step on asphalt or concrete in bare feet! Dogs feel the same discomfort on their pads. Walk dogs on grassy or light colored, cooler, surfaces on those hot summer days.

4. Water. We know to keep our pups hydrated everyday, especially on hot days. But a concern that we may not consider is what a dog will drink from when they need extra hydration during the summer. They will be more willing to drink water from still or stagnant places to get some water when they need a little more. Do not let them just drink from anywhere. Always keep a water bottle on hand when you are on the go and they do not have access to their water bowl.

Keep your dogs safe this summer by simply taking the proper precautions and you and your pup can have a blast enjoying what Southern California has to offer indoors and out!

Dog training is the best gift you can give to both your dog and yourself to create the best possible relationship. Not only is it important to train your dog for his benefit but it’s also important to train the owner as well.

K9 Klass focuses on training your dog, training you as the alpha-dog, and molding the relation between you and your dog. Often times, dogs go through boot camp as a puppy and the owner does not going through the proper training causing good behaviors to slip away. Both dog and owner need to learn the ways and actively use the training tools everyday.

The first few months are the most important in creating a healthy bond between you and your dog and the process of bonding with your new pet starts as soon as you bring them home. It is also important to continue doing fun trick-training as well to continue to utilize their brain and socialize them with other dogs and people to promote good behavior.

Like humans, animals can suffer from weight problems that can lead to internal health problems. Due to the fact that animals are so much smaller than you and me, one pound gained causes much more stress on their little bodies. It is very important to maintain the healthy weight of your pets as you do your own body.

The two most common reasons for obesity in dogs is a low activity level and over-feeding or feeding people food you your little guy. We love to shower our pets with love and attention and sometimes slipping them a few pieces of turkey on Thanksgiving or extra treats when they behave well can slowly pack on the pounds.

Extra fat on their body can strain the heart, slow down circulation and even shorten their life span. Talk to your vet about what healthy weight your pet should be at and start to take action if he or she is carrying around a little extra baggage.

Here is a great homemade dog food recipe to promote weight loss while still satisfying your furry friend:

INGREDIENTS:

4 cups cooked vegetables (carrots, peas, green beans, corn, etc.)

1 cup oat or wheat bran

2 cups rolled oats

1 cup uncreamed (low fat) cottage cheese

1/2 pound (1 cup) ground or chunked turkey, chicken (without skin), lean beef, heart, liver or lean hamburger

2 1/2 teaspoons Animal Essentials calcium

1 teaspoon vegetable oil

2 tablespoons nutritional yeast

balanced dog vitamins

DIRECTIONS:

1. Cook vegetables, using 3-4 cups of water. When they are soft, add the bran and oats.

2. Cover and let sit for ten minutes or until the oats are soft.

3. Add remaining ingredients, except the vitamins. Refriderate extras.

When serving a meal portion, add a balanced dog vitamin that supplies the minimum daily standards, as recommended on the label.

As Americans, we have heard over and over about whether or not carbs are good for your body and if eliminating them can help promote weight loss and other health benefits.

When it comes to your canine, carbs can be an excellent source of nutrients. For your furry friend, it’s not about whether or not they should eat them, it’s what carbs they are putting in their body.

Often times owners will focus on proteins and leave out the healthy carbs your pup needs to stay healthy and sustain energy. Many dog foods contain empty-calorie sources such as sugar, propylene glycol and corn syrup. It is rumored that even leftovers from doughnuts and fast food chains have been used in dog food to supplement the needs for carbohydrates instead of using natural and healthy resources. This is absolutely shocking!

Other examples of SHOCKING unhealthy carbohydrate sources used in dog foods are:

- Rice Flour

- Beet Sugar

- Corn Gluten Meal

- Brewer’s Rice

- Rancid or Moldy Grains (unacceptable for human concumption)

Be sure to read your dog food label carefully. As wary as you can be about what you put in your body, you need to be careful about what you put in the body of your pet as well.

When reading labels, avoid brands that list ingredients in loose, generic terms such as:

- Meal and Bone Meal

- Meat By-Products

- Dried Animal Digest

- Poultry By-Product Meal

- Poultry By-Product

- Digest of Poultry By-Product

- Liver Glandular Meal

- Fish Meal

- Fish By-Products

High quality products contain complex carbohydrates that come from whole grains. These are more nutritious and naturally healthy for your dog’s body the same way they are for you! You want to look for the word WHOLE GRAINS in the ingredients–if you don’t recognize an ingredient and are suspicious as to if it’s a natural ingredient…it probably isn’t!

For more information or to speak to a K9 Klass professional on finding the perfect healthy brand of food for your dog, call: (310) 322-3649.
